11/23/2023 0 Comments Chinese coins with square hole![]() Only time- and a whole lot of digging- will tell. On the other hand, the coin could be just another of the many mysteries of Oak Island. The coin could be part of the hidden Oak Island treasure, supporting theories that pirate loot buried by Europeans is located in the Money Pit. By visuals alone, Dreyden tentatively dates it somewhere in the 1600s or 1700s. While the crew says they’ve found several coins on Oak Island throughout the years, the shape and patina of this coin makes them believe its one of the oldest coins they’ve ever unearthed. “This coin is from somewhere much more exotic.” “I don’t believe it’s European,” Dreyden, a coin expert, says. Dreyden says you can infer the coin is “old-old” because of the square in the center. The crew inspects it, seeing indications of writing or symbols consistent with coins. The coin looks similar to a metal washer, having a square hole in the center indicating it isn’t your average quarter. But perhaps more telling than the old axe head is the coin in question, which the crew finds in another sweep of the area. Going back over the area with a more precise metal detector, the crew first finds what they believe is a broken axe, which they estimate is older than the discovery of the Money Pit in the 1795. “A lot of iron, but even more important, there’s some non-ferrous targets. “There’s a hell of a lot of metal in this area,” metal detection expert Gary Dreyden says in a clip. During a ground scan of a specific stretch of Oak Island in the premiere episode, the crew finds signs of metal in the area, which includes indication of a lot of iron-but also possible indication of other non-ferrous metals like gold and silver The coins would be cast on moulds, with a square hole in the middle. Most of these coins had square holes, and this was due to the production process. However, this single recently-discovered coin could provide a significant clue to the origins of the treasure. Holed coins are less rare than one would think, and coins from the countries of China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam were mostly made with holes in them until the late 1800’s. While some interesting artifacts have been unearthed along the way, the main treasure has never been found-and remains a mystery even to these explorers. Since the 19th century, treasure hunters-including the Lagina brothers from The Curse of Oak Island series-have tried to locate the loot. ![]() This treasure is supposedly in a so-called Money Pit, which was once open for excavating, but collapsed in the 1960s. So what’s the discovery? A single old coin.įor those not familiar with the series or the mystery of the island, Oak Island is in Nova Scotia, and legend has it that there’s big treasure buried there. A recent discovery on the season 8 premiere of the History Channel series The Curse of Oak Island could provide a significant clue to what's hidden on the island.
